“Hipkiss” is the collective pseudonym of married couple, Alpha and Christopher Mason (1964, 1964), who have shared their existence and vision since meeting in 1983. The duo’s complex compositions are the result of the perpetual, symbiotic interplay of two minds. British by birth, they took up residence in France in 2001 and have lived and worked in a rural area of its south-west for the past 15 years. Since adolescence, both artists were devotees of the humble pencil and have remained faithful to it throughout their long career, innovating techniques that elevate the medium. Their combined study of social sciences and geography and, less formally, ornithology and botany, are clearly evident in their work; as keen observers of both human-made and natural environments, they often draw inspiration from the frontiers between the two.

Hipkiss is represented in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitworth, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, FRAC Picardie; Occitanie, The Kupferstichkabinett, Cindy Sherman and Rudolf Zwirner, among others. Exhibition highlights: solo shows at The Drawing Center and Birmingham MAC; group shows at Tate Britain, Whitechapel, David Zwirner, La Maison Rouge, New Museum, The Irish Museum of Modern Art, La Caixa and The Aldrich.

“We’re very pleased to be a part of the upcoming auction in aid of The View Magazine, with its emphasis not just on art whose place as therapy is undisputed but the frequently prejudicial attitudes encountered by women within the British justice system. For those lucky enough never to have experienced prison life, it provides valuable insights into the issues this small sector of the incarcerated population face. While every prisoner is exceptionally vulnerable during the current pandemic, The View can provide a lifeline in the form of practical, informative articles to help women navigate the system“.
