Mayors for London but what about Women?

On  Wednesday 21st April, End Violence Against Women, Imkaan and Women’s Resource Centre hosted a Mayoral hustings with the candidates for the upcoming Mayor of London election and representatives standing for election at the local government elections.

As the elections draw nearer, The View joined in the hustings to hear what mayoral candidates were pledging to do about violence against women, policing in London and battling domestic abuse.

The impact of trauma on women’s mental health affects many women’s life choices, and being a victim of violence or abuse  can trigger offending behaviour, and may be  the reason why some women shift from becoming a victim in the criminal justice system to becoming an offender. It is important that the roots of problems such as domestic violence, sexual assault and rape are met head on, with sustainable and effective solutions, so less women end up in prison.

Below are some of the questions asked during the hustings and candidates’ answers.

Candidates running for the 2021 Mayor of London election are Shaun Bailey for the Conservative party, Sadiq Khan for Labour Party, Sian Berry for Green Party, Luisa Porritt for the Liberal Democrats and Mandu Reid for the Women’s Equality Party.
