Description
Annick Chevassu
My practice extends across a variety of concepts, materials and methodologies but is mainly rooted
in sculpture and painting. I focus primarily on representation, alternating and merging figuration
and abstraction.
My past and present concern has been to explore the theme of visibility and invisibility. This theme
connects with my interest in psychotherapy. In particular, my observation of the states of
consciousness in relation to the unconscious mind has influenced my work. I have used sculpture
as a means to represent strangers on trains on their mobiles. This particular process of drawing
people in transit, and then using these drawings to create mono-prints and sculptures, is a
representation of my interest in people and a way of commenting on modern life.
I recently took part in the online Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Week tv programme and became
interested in painting portraits. It was during one of those programmes that I painted Oti Mabuse’s
portrait which was featured in The View Magazine, a magazine which supports women in the
criminal justice system. My interest in painting women and in particular, their strengths, has
become an important part of my practice.
Annick graduated from Camberwell College of Arts in 2019, she is a London based artist.
